Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.’ Moshe Dayan

Is freedom anything else than the right to live as we wish? Nothing else.’ Epictetus

This past Sunday I went to Stratford Ontario for the last show I will be seeing this year at the Stratford Festival. It was a great performance of the classic play by Virgil The Aeneid. It was a moving piece that portrayed Aeneas survive the fall of Troy and become a refugee. He travels the Mediterranean until he settles in Italy and becomes an ancestor of the Romans; grandfather of Romulus and Remus. It was a spectacular performance but going to Stratford and seeing the play made me realise a very interesting revelation.

Aeneas Fleeing from Troy- Pompeo Betoni

You see after the play I usually grab a coffee for the ride back to Toronto. I always go to Tim Horton’s for a coffee wherever I go in Canada. It is something of a tradition and it helps keep me awake and alert for the drive. Yet on arriving home I had this Tim Horton’s cup that I kept at the start of the summer. It corresponded with going to Stratford for the first performance this year and at the time I kept it and wrote on the side the cities/towns I was in, had a coffee or visited this summer.   I noticed on the cup that I had visited a lot of different places over the summer.
I told a friend about this and they said something very interesting. “It must be nice to have the freedom to do and go wherever you want.” He said it’s because he is married and has kids. I told him that he went to a lot of places over the summer too. Yet he reminded me that he went where the kids and his wife wanted not necessary what he wanted. He looked at me and said he’d like to have that freedom.
That really made me stop and think for a while. Yes I am single and in many circles of society being single is looked upon as a misfortune. I have even been told that I should find someone to make me happy. Yet I am happy being single. I know that people in relationships see singles as unhappy because they want to justify their own choice of being in a relationship.
Yet looking at the Tim’s cup and what my friend said truly made me realise that being single does have one thing that I prize, freedom. Freedom to choose what I want to do, where I want to go, when I can do things, whom I want to spend my time with and I do not have to justify why I do things.
As with Aeneas, the gods and Fate may want him to do things their way, yet he chooses his own path and lives a full and wonderful life. Aeneas had the freedom and free will to choose his own path; I realize that I have been given the same choice. I know what my goals are and having the freedom to choose how to achieve them, truly is a rare and wondrous gift. Here’s to having the freedom to choose.
