Comic Strips: The Long Ball

May is finally here and with it the May edition of the comic The Craziest Things. This month is centred on a topic that am passionate about and that I have shared with the students, baseball.   I am not taking all the credit for the student’s love of the game; I will place that on the shoulders of the Toronto Blue Jays. Like many in the school and the city, people are excited about the team’s resurgence. Many of the students want to emulate the players. Many adults are surprised on how these players influence the students and how it affects them.

At the school I run a softball house league for the older students and they are really excited about playing.   Many emulate the Blue Jay players but the one they copy a lot is Jose Bautista.   I have had students come up to me and ask for a bat and ball so they can practice their batting, throwing and catching.
I watch them and several of the students get lined up and try to hit a homer just as Bautista would do. I even have seen them run the bases like him and Edwin Encarnacion, with his arm up like he is carrying his parrot.
I smile to myself and just take it all in. Then I remember what I did when I was their age. I was no different playing baseball or hockey. I would try to imitate my heroes. I seems that time may have changed but in the end, some things stay the same.
I hope you enjoy the latest instalment of, The Craziest Things; The Long Ball.
