Friday Two Cents: Building Community Through Dancing

I am posting late because I have had a whirlwind week. From supply teaching to helping to make sure the two Christmas concerts run well, getting the two slide shows together, making sure the audio work even when it was broken, and getting my Staff Christmas surprise ready I have had little time to relax until now.

Yet the amazing thing is that even though it was difficult and challenging it was fun. I think the most amazing thing is that during the grade 3 & 4 musical the students pulled off a dance that I taught them. I learned this dance at teachers college and we danced it at camp Olympia and at least once a week during our time there. I loved the song and dance so much I thought I would add it to the musical for something different in the Christmas themed musical.
The song is called “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny) by A. R. Rahman & The Pussycat Dolls [feat. Nicole Scherzinger]”. It is a really upbeat song and so is the dance. I always enjoyed dancing it and once the students learned the moves they enjoyed it too. They even danced it when we were not practicing. They asked me to play it for them and they dance, laughed and had fun.  I began to see a community begin to grow when they danced,
I guess my professor was right. You can build community through dancing.
