Friday Two Cents: Reliving My Innocence

This past week I experienced something that I have never done before. I worked in 4 different schools in 3 days with over 120 students. You may think that I am crazy or simply exhausted; I would have to say, a little of column A, and a little of Column B.   But yes I am exhausted and I had to take a couple of days off to recover not just from the workload but also I was beginning to feel a scratch in my throat. Yet out of this experience I was able to experience a glimpse into the innocence of the students.

Lets begin with the fact that I have begun growing my beard for my Halloween costume. This is significant because I have not grown a full beard in over 10 years and many of the students never have seen me with one. When the students see me with a beard, they are surprised and a bit taken aback by it that their initial response to it is indicative of their innocence. Their comments were so amazing and sweet that I have to share them.

First time with a full beard in a long time.

Some of their quotes were:

“Mr. Paul! You got a beard?” I said, “Yes I went out and bought one.” Their response, “Really it looks real.”
“Mr. Paul, how do you get the beard?”
“Mr. Paul where did you get a beard?”
“Mr. Paul why do you have a beard?” I said “Its for my costume.” The student said, “It looks real, where did you get it?”
“Mr. Paul you look like a daddy now.”

Don’t you just love their innocent questions and statements? Hmm it’s too bad we have to lose it when we grow-up. But at least I can experience it through the students and in some ways I can relive my own innocence.
