Friday Two Cents: We Are A Community

This past week has been a whirlwind experience to say the least. It all began with a large number of the Teacher Candidates (TC) from teachers college, going up north to a camp for the weekend. We went up there for the purpose of building community within our group.

Friday started with a 3 hr. bus ride from Toronto to the camp, but once up there we began doing activities to bring us together. Some activities involved rock wall and high rope climbing, dancing, singing around the campfire while eating s’mores and my personal favourite, going for a paddle in a canoe. These were all designed to bring us all together with shared experiences.

Yet there was also some free time and by far this is where the bonding truly began. Many would go down to the beach swim, play some beach volleyball or sit on the dock or picnic while engaging someone in a conversation. But the biggest icebreaker was our free times at night were we got together played a little pool, foosball and enjoyed a talent show. Yes we even had this amazing talent show where we got out of our shells and saw some amazing people and their talents. There were people who sang, played an instrument or both and one person even juggled. I even did a little stand up where I did some impressions that I do with the children.

After a couple of sleep deprived days we returned home knowing that we would be going into our practicum the next day. I for one was tired but also excited because I would be meeting a new group of grade six children. I was nervous but once the day rolled on I stated to get to know the children. The next day was more fun than the first. Here I started to really engage with the children and get to know them. They were beginning to welcome me into their community.

The rest of the week involved us going to lecture but the atmosphere in the room was noticeably different. We felt more comfortable with each other. We began trusting one another and there came a real sense that you are not alone on this journey, that there is someone else watching your back. Without even noticing it we became a community with our shared hardships, with trusting each out in the tasks we undertook and just being there for each other. Hmm I guess that weekend away really did do the trick.
