Friday Two Cents: Building Community

twoCentsOldNew

Last week I have begun a journey that will encompass eight months of learning, testing my limits and pushing myself to succeed. I am talking about starting teachers college. I am taking the Primary/Junior requirements to teach children from kindergarten to grade 6.

However the first area or topic we are getting into is building community. We are doing this by creating our own community within the program. We are the catholic stream of the university faculty of education and we are at an off campus site. This allows us to build this tight nit community of aspiring teachers. It has been a bit slow at the beginning but we are beginning to get to know one another and the networking is beginning.

I never thought about this before but there is something that we all share. Yes we all want to be teachers and work with children but there is something else, our faith. From this one common factor we are striving to meet our own goals but also to work together and help one another. I always thought that faith is a good thing because of common traditions and customs with others, which is true. But with that common faith it allows everyone to relax a bit and be our selves without the fear of judgment when it commons to our beliefs or ethnicities.

Community

To further this goal of community, many of us are going away to a retreat up north to the woods for some more community bonding and team building. Many were hesitant but I jumped at the chance. I love going into the woods but going someplace with others on a common goal of just trying to just get to know one another and enjoying each other’s company, is refreshing. Too many times the goals of a trip, is the destination, to see or do something. But this time it feels like we are just going to have fun while enjoying each other’s company. Sometimes it is lost on people who are going away that it is not the destination but the journey you take with the other person/s. I intend to try to do exactly that.   Here’s to the journey and the people you meet along the way.
