Friday Two Cents: None of the Above

twoCentsOldNew

For those of you, like me who live in Ontario, there is a provincial election coming up on June 12th.   For those of you who do not live in Ontario, but are believers in democracy, this might be rather interesting.   I am not going to talk about a political party or a belief of mine that is reflected in different platforms. No, I want to talk to all of you who love the free and democratic process, about going out and vote. Yet there is an interesting option that many, including the politicians don’t want you to know about. It is about “declining your ballot”.

Yes there is another option for those of you who do not know who to vote for or are sick and tied with politicians’ constant broken promises, etc. There is an option D) on the multiple choice quiz. If you do not believe me here is a quote from the Elections Act in Ontario.

Declined ballot

“ 53.  An elector who has received a ballot and returns it to the deputy returning officer declining to vote, forfeits the right to vote and the deputy returning officer shall immediately write the word “declined” upon the back of the ballot and preserve it to be returned to the returning officer and shall cause an entry to be made in the poll record that the elector declined to vote. R.S.O. 1990, c. E.6, s. 53. ”

 The Elections Act.

You see you do not have to pick any of the above and it will count as a declined ballot. More than what the wording says, ‘forfeiting’, in the election means to the politicians that you exercised your right to vote and none of them have earned your vote.   This will be recorded in the official records and the politicians will notice. Especially if the amount of declined ballots is the difference for one politician winning or coming in second. You see every vote counts.

I am not saying you should decline your ballot. What I am encouraging is for every eligible citizen to go out and vote. If you vote for a specific party, politician, or decline your ballot you are participating in a proud and honorable exercise.  One which fewer and fewer are participating in.

An exercise that was won for us with precious blood and sacrifice. I say this on the 70th anniversary when thousands of Canadians, Americans, British and countless others stormed a beach in Normandy to end oppression, to secure our right to self-determination. To live our lives without tyranny and have the freedom to do what we want and to be what ever we want.

On June 12th go out and vote, it is the least you can do to honor those who sacrificed so much so we have the freedom to vote.
