Friday Two Cents: The Root of All-Evil

Greed; noun – intense and selfish desire for something, esp. wealth, power, or food

With school out for the summer, I have finally had some free time to think and enjoy old friendships, hopefully renew some and with any luck create new ones.  But during this time I have had a realization that the children in school made me aware of. Something I only realized this week.

It happened with the kindergartens in the last week of school.  The children are pure and innocent of all the evils in this world and that their actions, at the moment might seem sweet and naïve may have yielded a lesson for me and perhaps everyone.

Many times, during the last week of school, the children give me gifts of thanks for the year.   Mugs, gift cards, movie passes etc.  I feel this is not necessary, that I do what I do because I enjoy it.  Many of these gifts are expensive and I am overwhelmed with gratitude that the children thought about me but at the same time, guilty that the parents spent the money.

One child gave me something that was rather expensive and I said a wholehearted thank you to them and the parents.  But I also told them they shouldn’t of spent so much.  The parents and child’s response was, “It’s only money.  The joy the gift brought more than makes up for it.”  I thanked them again and felt more overwhelmed by their answer.

That was the lighter side of the money issue; I did not truly comprehend it until this week when I witnessed the darker side of money.  I witnessed what happens to people, good people when they become obsessed with getting money.  It turned a good person into an ogre and in some ways I did not even recognize him.

I had read the book “Me to We: Finding Meaning in a Material World” and it really made me think about our society.  How many of us are just working to get stuff, material positions or to maintain their stuff.  Grated I too work to have a few nice things but not like what I have been seeing.  This person has become obsessed with getting stuff that maintaining it has become his life’s work.  It has made him cynical, grumpy and mean.  Characteristics I would have never used to describe him.

Perhaps what that child’s innocent sentiment is telling us is, what we should be striving for.  “It’s only money.  The joy the gift brought, more than makes up for it.”  The idea that money should be used to bring joy to people, and not be the root of all the evil in this world is what we should be striving for.  If only we all thought like the innocence of a child.

Maybe it’s not too late.
