Comic Strips: A Little Too Close To Home

If you ever want to know where I get my ideas from for these comics, know that many come from real experiences I have with the children.  This particular comic is one of those situations.

I cannot tell you how many times the children ask to go to the computer lab and play games.  At first I thought it was because of the bad weather.  “It’s to cold outside.” or “It’s raining.”  But then they would come up to me on sunny days and ask if we have to go outside.

Even when baseball and soccer started they would ask the same thing.  It’s almost like we are torturing them when we go outside and play games.  What’s interesting is that the parents’ see the same thing at home and they told me after the comic was published.

However, the children’s response was the most interesting.  The children in the comic strip were more concerned that I drew the boy talking too dark (actually I did by accident).  I asked then if they got the joke, that they where more interested in playing computer games instead of getting some fresh air and exercise.  They got it but they still focused on the colouring of the kid.  They were dismissing the whole idea or basis of the comic.

Maybe I struck a little too close to home.  Maybe I made them see that perhaps their constant request for computer time was a bit too much.  Possibly; How we think shows through in how we act. Attitudes are mirrors of the mind. They reflect thinking.” David Joseph Schwartz

One thing is for certain; they don’t ask to go to the computer lab.  Well, not as often.
