Friday Two Cents: There shall be no peace

As a side bar to my actual discussion, many of my friends were telling me that since Canada is getting rid of the penny, I should rename my ‘Friday two cents’ section.  I was debating whether to change it to ‘Friday nickel’ or ‘Friday Five cents’ but I think I will keep the two cents.  I love collecting coins and I have fond memories of collecting pennies, to fill those coin cases, with my parents.  Hence, in honour of the penny, I will keep the two cents and I will use the first and last Canadian one-cent pieces for my graphic.

Now with that said and done, my thoughts cannot help go to the Ontario Education Minister’s statement on imposing collective agreements on the public school teachers.  It is my understanding, that she will be using Bill 115 to impose contracts on the public school teachers in Ontario and then she will ask the cabinet to repeal the bill after the contracts are complete.  The minister believes that with scraping the bill, the teachers will return to extra-curricular activities.

What?! It’s like a bully coming up to you and saying, ‘I’m going to use this baseball bat to break your arm and leg.  Then I will trash the bat and never use it against you again.  Then we can be friends and hug.”  Yeah, I don’t think so.

If history has shown us anything it is that when people’s rights are trampled on, the seeds of rebellion are planted.  Fortunately or not, the people of Ontario have seen this type of situation before.

Fifteen years ago the then government of Mike Harris tried to impose their will on the teachers too.  The result was two – three years of war between the teachers and the government.  The collateral damage that resulted was that extra-curricular activities were canceled.   History is about to repeat itself.

The conflict between the teachers and the government will result in no extra-curricular activates for the life of the imposed collective agreement.  And I believe that this is the best option for the teachers.

You might wonder why?  It is human nature to miss something only when it is gone. The public (parents and government) has taken the teachers for granted.  They do not understand how much more the teachers do for their children, than just teach them.  They provide opportunities to grow outside the classroom.

Unfortunately, the public fails to realize that those opportunities are done on the teacher’s personal time.  Teachers are paid to teach the children from 8 am – 3:30 pm, anything else is the teacher’s personal time.  So grading papers at home, coaching a team, conducting a club, producing a concert all after school is done on personal time.

I wonder how many steel workers, plumbers, lawyers, bureaucrats and government officials would do work outside their normal hours without getting paid.  Maybe the public needs a reminder on how important and giving teachers really are.
