Friday Two Cents: Good Things Do Happen

twocents

Today, people in North America were shocked to hear about the terrible things that happened in Connecticut.  With the tragic loss of innocent life, the questions started to appear. Why did this happen? Why aren’t there tougher laws on guns?  Why did he target the children and so on.  However, everyone should know that life is not just the tragedies that happen in the world but good things do happen too.

Yes I know there are those who say what happened in Connecticut should not be forgotten and should be a call to action against further violence in our world. I understand that we must take time to mourn and ask the tough questions about what transpired.  But I know that there are great things happening in schools too and we must focus and be grateful for those moments.

Today my students did their Christmas Concert and it was fantastic.  The children put on a wonderful show and my kids with their puppets where just awesome (I posted a few puppets the children created).  Yes, today kids had fun, parents enjoyed watching them like many parents have done this year and in previous years. We all had a great time.

This year my kids put on “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and the other older children put on a talent show.  Not only did the older children have all the fun but the kindergarten children put on a play, as did the grades 1 & 2 children.  And if I may be so bold as to say, they were all spectacular shows over the past two nights.

These are the stores we should be focusing on.  I understand the tragedy must get attention to make sure this never happens again.  However, stop and take in beautiful moments, such as  kindergarten children saying “That’s — Not — San — ta” one syllable at a time (Adorable).  Or a grade two child saying her lines with such feeling and confidence she could be on Broadway.  Or an older student taking on a role of the Grinch with such feeling and enthusiasm, that he took on an accent and stated to sound like Jim Carrey.

In tough times, these are the moments that remind us that Good Things Do Happen.
